The NBA: free agency offseason has been pretty exciting and full of big headlines. One big story for the day is that free agent Derrick Rose is discussing signing a one year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He could very well soon sign with the great team in the coming hours or days. Whether it will make them a better team or get them over the hump to compete with the dominant Golden State Warriors is another question. But here are the details on the developing story so far.

Details

The former MVP is set to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers for next season according to ESPN sources.

He is also known as the youngest player in NBA history to win the MVP Award when he was a member of the Chicago Bulls. The Cavaliers are in serious talks with Rose to sign a one-year deal with the team under the veteran's minimum for $2.1 million. This would be a good move for the Point Guard, as he would get to play with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. The move gives the Cavs a decent player off the bench, but it could still not be enough for them to beat the Warriors.

Rose could still sign with another team to get more money possibly since the Cavaliers are only offering him $2.1 million. The Cavs do not have much cap space left to sign him to a bigger deal.

Derrick Rose has been in other talks in the offseason to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and now the defending Eastern Conference champions.

Season with the Knicks

Derrick Rose was a part of the dysfunctional Knicks organization last season. The fact that he went AWOL before a game did not help him out either in the matter. Although he did play solid while being in New York. He showed that he could still play in the NBA, getting to the rim and finishing.

Specifically, his presence in the paint was astonishing last season as he averaged a career high 10 points-per-game in the paint.

This was tied for second best behind Toronto Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan. Being compared to this star caliber player is phenomenal and it shows that he can still get to the paint with his speed.

Additionally, Derrick Rose averaged 18 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists during the 2016-17 NBA season. He also shot 47% from the floor, which was his best percentage since the 2009-10 season.

Rose played in 64 games for the Knicks last year.

However, durability is still a huge issue for him as he cannot stay healthy during the NBA season. Towards the end of the season, he had to have yet another knee surgery on a torn meniscus. It was just one of many knee injuries that he has sustained throughout his career. Fans can only wish him the best as he wants to continue playing under his own power.

The Knicks have made deals recently with their roster by signing Tim Hardaway Jr. to a big contract, as well as re-signing Ron Baker. Questions still remain about where Carmelo Anthony will go next season - either to the Houston Rockets or possibly staying in New York for one more year.

The Cavaliers are hoping to add Derrick Rose to be able to compete a little bit more with the Warriors. That is the best that they can do for now.
