Major news from the WWE has arrived as of Tuesday evening for the upcoming WWE "Money In The Bank" 2017 pay-per-view event. Reportedly, the event will feature a first-ever women's version of the classic Ladder Match. The Pro Wrestling Sheet website reported on the latest WWE rumors of the historic match being planned for the "SmackDown" brand's pay-per-view in June. If true, this shows the continued push to make the women's division a stronger unit moving forward.
History in the making
The WWE has been breaking new ground and pushing the limits with the women's division over the past year or so.
Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair battled in several first-ever matches including a Hell in a Cell match at the PPV last October and then a "Falls Count Anywhere" match on WWE "Raw." Both of these matches involved the women's championship on the line. Charlotte won the Hell in a Cell match to retain the title but would lose to Sasha on "Raw" in the other match when Sasha locked in a submission hold through a guard rail in the crowd.
The "SmackDown" women's roster has also seen several first-ever matches, as Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch competed in a tables match at a pay-per-view and then inside a steel cage on "SmackDown Live" for the main event. The championship belt was on the line in these matches as well.
The cage match saw the eventual reveal of Mickie James as a masked assailant who helped out Alexa.
Now the women's division will apparently make history again with the ladder match, something that has never been seen before by WWE fans. Current "SmackDown" women's stars on the roster include Becky Lynch, Carmella, Charlotte Flair, Natalya, Tamina, and WWE "SmackDown" Women's Champion Naomi.
In addition, the division has featured Nikki Bella who is on a hiatus after "WrestleMania 33" and WWE seems to be planning Lana's debut on the roster in the future.
'Money in the Bank' details
Each of the previous "Money in the Bank" pay-per-view events has featured a ladder match of some sort involving male superstars. Dean Ambrose won the last edition of the men's ladder match in 2016 at the PPV and then cashed in his briefcase later in the night.
Ambrose was able to hit Seth Rollins with the briefcase and pin him to win the WWE Championship.
There have been editions of the ladder match where the major championship was the prize rather than the briefcase. Fans will continue to find out more of the details of the match card on "SmackDown Live" in the coming weeks leading up to the big pay-per-view.
WWE's "Money in the Bank" 2017 will take place on Sunday, June 18th, 2017 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
