“Better Call Saul” season 5 seems to be inching closer to the “Breaking Bad” timeline with the official transformation of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) to the criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. But before he breaks it up with Kim (Rhea Seehorn), it looks like Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) and Mike (Jonathan Banks) have some mending to do after Gus started to doubt Mike’s loyalty.
The previous season ended in a bad spot for Gus and Mike after the Superlab construction incident.
To recall, Mike seemed to show his soft side when Werner (Rainer Bock), the German-based construction crew, left his work unfinished and escaped. Although Mike killed Werner, Gus seemed to be unsatisfied with the way Mike handled the situation.
The mending of Gus and Mike’s working relationship
In an interview with TheWrap, Esposito revealed Mike and Gus ended on a hard note. “Certainly, things will be strained, and Mike hasn’t given his allegiance over to Gus completely,” he said.
It couldn’t be denied that things would be good between Mike and Gus in “Better Call Saul” season 5. To recall, in “Breaking Bad,” Mike used to be Gus’ most loyal guy.
He was even his right-hand man.
However, fans are about to see how their relationship got strained but eventually mended. “There’s going to be some moves that have to be made, some conversations between Mike and Gus that either repair or don’t repair the relationship,” Esposito added.
But it looks like Mike’s moral will be tested in the new season, especially on the way he has to work for Gus. For Esposito, his character and Banks’ role are similar men from the original series to the spinoff.
Gus is undeniably smart, so he also needs someone who is not only as smart as him but who knows how to take some action. Yet for now, they are in a quite intense situation, but he promised things would be ironed out in the new season.
Getting closer to the end
Co-showrunner Peter Gould earlier revealed the show is coming closer to an end, as it already revealed its main goal: Jimmy’s transformation to become Saul Goodman. So “Better Call Saul” season 5 may also be the right time to end Jimmy’s relationship with Kim.
Jimmy never mentioned Kim’s name when fans saw him as Saul in “Breaking Bad.” So, there are questions about how the two will end their romance.
From the looks of it, the new season will show major character developments. Although Seehorn couldn’t say that much about the upcoming installment, she revealed to Vulture the series’ storytelling is perfectly working for her.
Seehorn said she is still surprised by the show’s scripts as all of the characters are continuously evolving. No one would ever feel stuck, and it continues to be page-turners and intense. So, fans have to wait and see what will be the turn of events in “Better Call Saul” season 5 when it hits AMC in 2020.
