"Captain Marvel" movie spoilers reveal new details about its setting and Jude Law's character, Mar-Vell. Film producer Jonathan Schwarts revealed the real reason why the Marvel movie is set in the 90s era during his interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Law talked about Mar-Vell's role in Carol Danvers's life in the film. "Captain Marvel" will feature Carol going back to Earth to prevent an alien invasion orchestrated by the Skrulls. She is joined by the Kree elite squad called Starforce, consisting of Mar-Vell, Korath, Minerva, and Ronan the Accuser.

Choosing the 90s era for the movie

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jonathan Schwarts wanted the "Captain Marvel" film in the 90s because he wanted Carol to have a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where she could carve out her own path. There were also fewer female superheroes in the world. Schwarts added that he was inspired by classic 90s films such as "Total Recall," "Robocop," "Terminator 2," and more.

“’90s action movie is not the worst reference in the world, especially when you start looking at 'Robocop,' 'Total Recall,' even 'Starship Troopers' a little bit,” Schwartz told EW. “'Terminator 2,' 'Independence Day.' There’s a high-concept action-movie feel there that ends up being very character-based but also super bad**s, which is kind of the bullseye we wanted to hit.”

It was previously reported that "Captain Marvel" will not be an origin story, as Carol already has her powers and left Earth to join the Kree army.

She only came back to Earth to protect her home from the Skrulls, a shapeshifting reptilian race who has been at war with the Kree for centuries. Carol will also meet a young Nick Fury and Phil Coulson in the movie, as they assist her in stopping the Skrulls from getting through Project: Pegasus. The Skrulls appearance on Earth could spark the "Secret Invasion" arc in future MCU films.

More details for Mar-Vell

According to the Indian Express, Jude Law stated that Mar-Vell will act as a mentor to Carol and believes that she is capable of something more. He helps her to control her abilities as she believes they are a blessing from the Kree. Law also revealed that he is devoted to the Kree Empires cause not ever questioning their actions or philosophies.

It is a stark contrast to his comic book counterpart, who is questionable to the Kree's plans and has grown to care for the planet Earth. Carol will return to "Avengers 4" to help the surviving heroes stop Thanos and save their friends from the Infinity Stones.
