In the days since the White House Correspondents Dinner, comedian and host Michelle Wolf has faced an onslaught of criticism due to her remarks about the Donald Trump administration and Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Despite this, Sanders has not given her thoughts but is facing her own round of backlash in the process.

Sanders silent on WHCD

In the nearly 100 years since the very first White House Correspondents Dinner, the president and his administration have come together with reporters, journalists, and other media outlets to show a sense of unity and support for the First Amendment.

While the president is traditionally roasted by a comedian, to which the commander in chief is given a chance to respond with humor, Donald Trump decided to skip this year's event for the second year in a row due to his ongoing feud with the press. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders attended in his place and was on the receiving end of controversial jokes by host Michelle Wolf that many in the right wing media found offensive.

Since then, Michelle Wolf's performance has been supported by many on the political left, while conservatives have called for her to apologize.

During the May 1 press briefing at the White House, Sarah Sanders surprisingly faced no questions about the uncomfortable White House Correspondents Dinner or her thoughts on comedian Michelle Wolf. In response, Twitter went viral to fill in the silence.

Twitter erupts

After Sarah Huckabee Sanders held her press briefing and didn't speak on her thoughts on the White House Correspondents Dinner, critics made sure to hit back on Twitter.

"Michelle seems to have gotten through to (SHS). Sarah Sanders seems to have gone a little bit easy on the 'smokey eyes'... too bad she isn't going easy on the smokey lies," one tweet read.

"-3,000,000 Smokey eye," a Twitter user wrote in reference to Sarah Huckabee Sanders' makeup.

"Sarah, I hope you weren’t too offended by the jokes from a comedian at the correspondence dinner. They weren’t nearly as offensive as the person you defend, Donald Trump's disgusting comments towards Rosie O’Donnell, Carli Fiorina, Megan Kelly, and others," another tweet added.

"In all seriousness, it's really difficult to write jokes about Sarah Huckabee Sanders' appearance without being hacky.

There's a LOT of low-hanging fruit there," a social media user wrote. "For everyone who was offended by Michelle Wolf on Saturday, are you as offended today by the performance of (SHS)?" a follow-up tweet read.
