Netflix has announced they are renewing the zombie-comedy “Santa Clarita Diet” for a third season. The entire cast, including Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant, is returning for another 10-episode season in 2019.
The streaming giant released the second season in March and tackled the source of the zombie outbreak. According to The Hollywood Reporter, writers had already begun writing the third season, with the hopes of being picked up.
Season 3 could tackle loose ends from the previous season
The story has so far been broken down into two-week periods, meaning the family has only been impacted by this zombie virus for about a month.
Rotten Tomatoes reported that Season 2 received an 82 percent fresh rating.
The show is about Joel (Olyphant) and Sheila (Barrymore) who are a married realtor couple who are living very complicated lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, with their daughter. Sheila is impacted by a zombie virus and experiences a dramatic lifestyle change, sending their perfect family appearance down a path of destruction.
“Santa Clarita Diet,” Season 2 featured a handful of guest appearances, including Nathan Fillion, Joel McHale, Andy Richter, Maggie Lawson, and Natalie Morales. The “Santa Clarita Diet” renewal comes as Netflix is cracking down on when and which shows receive new season renewals. Netflix has turned their focus toward original shows.
They just recently announced that the comedy “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” is ending after four seasons.
Release date not nailed down
“Santa Clarita Diet” Season 3 will be released in 2019, but an exact date has not been determined. Den of Geek says the show could be released any time between February to April. Netflix has begun releasing shows with later start dates.
With a 2019 release, Netflix users have plenty of time to dive into the twists and turns that Season 2 featured. Barrymore told Variety that the show is about a married couple and marriage that continues to be stretched and challenged.
Show creator Victor Fresco has said that in the long run they don’t know where the show is going, but they have an idea for where Season 3 will take them.
Fresco has also said that writers had already begun writing the third season before Netflix picked up the series for another go. We will have to wait to see where the new season will take us. Netflix has reported that the show has become one of the top comedy shows on the streaming service.
