The latest updates and spoilers for "Spider-Man: Homecoming 2" reveal a classic Spider-Man villain joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he will be the web-slinger's next foe in the sequel. "Nocturnal Animals" star Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast for the role of Quentin Beck (a.k.a. Mysterio) in the movie, opposite main cast member Tom Holland.

Variety reported that Michael Keaton will also reprise his role as Adrian Toomes (a.k.a. The Vulture) in the sequel. The second "Homecoming" movie will take place after the events of "Avengers 4" and it will be the first film headlining in phase 4 of the MCU.

Who is Mysterio?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks for the role of Mysterio in the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel. Gyllenhaal was at one time considered to replace Tobey Maguire for Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 2" and "Spider-Man 3" after the latter injured his back while shooting "Seabiscuit." Now, it seems that Gyllenhaal's path in joining a Marvel film has come full-circle. But this time against Peter Parker himself.

In the comics, Quentin Beck is a failed actor turned expert special effects wizard, who turns to a life of crime. He uses his knowledge of special effects and technology to create an illusion that he has superpowers. Quentin used a costume from the movie studio as his disguise and has fooled everyone into believing that he is an alien from outer space or an evil magician.

Mysterio has tangled with Spider-Man on numerous occasions and he was a founding member of the Sinister Six alongside Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Sandman, Electro, and The Vulture.

The Vulture returns

According to Variety, Michael Keaton will return as Vulture in the sequel, after reports of Gyllenhaal taking up the role of Mysterio in the movie.

Vulture's return could also factor into the sequel's story as he knows Spidey's true identity. Whether he plans to exploit this secret to Quentin or not is a profound mystery in the film. The Vulture is Spidey's first major enemy in the MCU, as he is the ringleader of a black market arms dealer who sells Chitauri enhanced weaponry.

Peter was able to foil his plans and stopped him from stealing more weapons on the Stark cargo plane from the Avengers Tower.

The plot of "Homecoming 2" will feature Peter Parker traveling the globe as he faces new challenges that will test his heroism while maintaining a normal life. There are also rumors that Gwen Stacy could be Peter's love interest in the film and her version as a European student.
