Netflix in action
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is the publishing company that owns the Carmen Sandiego property. Caroline Fraser is head of HMH and is the executive producer of both the Netflix animated series and the feature film. Netflix's Carmen Sandiego movie will be based on the game
The beloved childhood game focused on the ACME Detective Agency, established to capture the international master thief Carmen Sandiego from committing crimes all over the world. The game was turned into several television shows which aired from 1991 to 1998. The upcoming Netflix animated series will tell the story of Carmen and how and why she became the international criminal that everyone knows her as.
Deadline has said that the upcoming film will be a standalone film about the criminal mastermind. This is not the only time that plans have been made to bring the international thief to feature films. In 2012, it was reported that Jennifer Lopez was tied to the property after an earlier attempt was made with Sandra Bullock.
Netflix series is fourth to feature Carmen Sandiego
The Netflix animated series will be the fourth Carmen Sandiego based series. The first ran from 1991 to 1996 and was called “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” The second ran from 1996-1998 for two seasons and was called “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?” They both were education game shows that ran on PBS.
Variety has reported that the animated series will be based on the computer game franchise that followed the criminal thief as she stole national treasures across the world. “Stranger Things,” star Finn Wolfhard will provide the voice of her tech-savvy sidekick through 20 episodes. Rodriguez confirmed the announcement of her casting on social media, just days after finishing up filming the fourth season of her hit show “Jane the Virgin.” Rodriguez has hinted that the fifth season of her show could be the final season.
