Black Panther slashes its way to the top of the record books with the best February opening of all time and the 5th movie ever to debut over $200 Million. IMAX locations took in $23 million for the fourth-highest total in the format of all time. This movie doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Audiences can’t get enough of the latest superhero adaption.

The Synopsis

Chadwick Boseman portrays King T’Challa, ruler of Wakanda, an advanced civilization. A conflict arises with Michael B. Jordan’s character, Eric Killmonger. Killmonger intends to take the throne from Boseman.

Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, and Daniel Kaluuya also star in this action-packed adventure.

What the critics say

Disney-Marvel’s latest endeavor has been receiving praise from fans and critics alike. It received an A+ on Cinema Score and currently has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes — making it the highest rated superhero flick on the site, beating out Iron Man and The Dark Knight. USA Today awarded the film four out of four stars and called it Marvel Studios' best origin film since Guardians of the Galaxy. Natasha Alford, a writer for The Grio, exclaimed, “Black Panther is remarkable because this film is a movement, a revolution in progress, and a joy to experience all wrapped into one".

The Fan response

Social media has shown an immense amount of support for the film. A lot of celebrities, like former first lady Michelle Obama, took to Twitter to share their reactions to the movie.

Octavia Spencer actually rented out a theater in Mississippi to “ensure that all our brown children can see themselves as a superhero.” There have been numerous campaigns to raise money for the sole purpose of giving children the experience of seeing the new movie.

According to GoFundMe, over 100 campaigns have raised over $100,000 to help kids across the nation see Black Panther.

RelishMix reported that Twitter hashtags for Black Panther set an all-time film record as well with 559,000 unique posts in one day.

International Box Office

South Korea was instrumental in the international success of the film, contributing $25.3 million to the $169 million international total. The film made the strong debut despite not premiering in China, Japan, and Russia until next month. Black Panther now has the 15th best international opening of all time.

Audiences have fallen in love with Marvel’s latest project. It looks like this is going to be another big year for Disney. Disney-Marvel's next movie, Avengers Infinity Wars, hits theaters hits theaters May 4, 2018.
