The trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” does not really dive into spoiler territory, but it leaves room for several character theories. One important theory involves Kylo Ren and his return to the Light Side. Three scenes in the preview support fans’ speculation that he may not really be the main villain that he appeared to be in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

What happened to Kylo?

The last time we saw Kylo Ren in “The Force Awakens,” he was badly wounded from his fight with Rey (Daisy Ridley). He also sported a new facial scar. He stood on the Starkiller Base before the planet exploded.

We did not see how he escaped although his appearance in “The Last Jedi” confirms he came out of the explosion alive. Now he returns in Episode 8 supposedly to exact revenge and further carry out orders against the rebellion from Supreme Leader Snoke.

However, “The Last Jedi” is supposedly also a journey of Kylo Ren’s battle between the Dark Side and the Light Side. It could end with the villain eventually switching sides. According to Screen Rant, the script for the scene when Kylo killed Han Solo is cryptic of his change in allegiance. It says Kylo was “somehow weakened by this wicked act, instead of it strengthening him." Moving into the next movie, Kylo might actually join forces with Rey and his mother General Leia.

Three scenes from a trailer for “The Last Jedi” support this theory.

First scene

Kylo Ren smashes his helmet against the wall, which could be suggestive of his resistance to the Dark Side. The helmet is part of his persona as the master of the Knights of Ren, an organization led by Supreme Leader Snoke.

Second

Kylo appears strained and emotional while he aims his Tie Silencer at General Leia.

If killing Han Solo horrified him then doing so to his mother would likely have the same effect. So instead of killing Leia, maybe Kylo saves her in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

Third hint

At the end of the trailer, Rey says, “I need someone to show me my place in all this” and the scene cuts to Kylo extending his hand to someone.

Assuming he offered his hand to Rey, then there are two ways to interpret his gesture. One is that Rey is turning to the Dark Side and the other is that Kylo is assuring her that they are on the same team. Regardless, the trailer could show a different story to avoid spoiling the film.

Regardless, it is uncertain whether Kylo does battle the Dark Side and switch sides in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" or not.
