It may not be frequent and long enough to be appreciated by viewers, but "Grey's Anatomy" has practiced diversity that has something to do with languages. In the all-new season of Greys, episode 4, Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) revealed that she can speak French and proceeded to talk to Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) who spoke German. It's a bit odd given how Amelia never spoke the language before, but after her surgery, she suddenly ditched her English.
When Amelia learned of her brain tumor, she asked Maggie to tell the news to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) because she just couldn't do it.
"She's been telling me I'm crazy for years and this kinda makes me," says Amelia. Amelia's friends can confirm that her unusual behavior was likely caused by the tumor. When she went under the knife and doctors successfully removed the tumor, she began to speak in German.
Grey's Anatomy's history of foreign language
In "Grey's Anatomy Season 13," Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) hooked up with a Polish colleague. Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk), during the course of her stay in Greys, spoke the language to Arizona. Eliza Minnick arrived at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital with the intention of introducing sports medicine to the crew. Signed up as a consultant to the hospital. She was hated mostly for her attitude and the fact that she took Dr.
Richard Webber's (James Pickens Jr.) position.
In "Grey's Anatomy Season 14," Eliza "ghosted" on Arizona and that's when she hooked up with Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) who she later discovered was an Italian OBGYN who was doing research at the hospital where she works. Arizona learned of Carina's Italian background after Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Giannotti) walked into the house and found them on the couch.
That's when she discovered, they are siblings and Andrew's given name is actually Andrea.
The Spanish heritage of the great Callie Torres
The best part, however, in "Grey's Anatomy's" quest to diversity is Callie Torres' (Sara Ramirez) Hispanic heritage. Speaking Spanish when she's angry or stressed out, her outbursts became a normal thing for Arizona Robbins.
Callie Torres was married to Arizona Robbins until they divorced in the series' 12th season. They have a daughter named Sophia who is expected to return to the show in the upcoming episodes of Greys.
Diversity is not totally new to "Grey's Anatomy" after some of its storylines include the LGBT world. Jessica Capshaw, in an interview with the actress, said, she never knew the impact of her role until fans started to acknowledge her contribution.
