Jennifer Lopez has pledged to donate $1 million for the victims of the recent tragedy in Puerto Rico due to Hurricane Maria, Fortune reported. This U.S. territory was badly hit by the hurricane, which is the third catastrophic storm to hit this region.

The singer appeared at a press conference with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo over the weekend. She revealed that she is working with her boyfriend, Alex Rodriguez, to gather all the support they need to offer as much help to the victims of the calamity.

Lopez has family members living in Puerto Rico, while Rodriquez has lived in the Dominican Republic.

Her boyfriend is a retired professional baseball player who has played for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers in the major leagues.

Mobilization

Jennifer Lopez said during the press conference that she and her boyfriend are both using their connections in the entertainment, sports and business industries “to garner support for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.”

Hurricane Maria destroyed property and killed at least two people in Puerto Rico last week. Aside from this, certain parts of the Caribbean have, also, suffered from previous disasters brought on by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

The singer contracted her ex-husband, Marc Anthony, to help in the mobilization efforts and relief operations in Mexico and the Caribbean, the report added.

Her ex-husband also hails from Puerto Rico.

Family members

Furthermore, Jennifer Lopez shared on social media that she has been struggling to contact her relatives in Puerto Rico after the disaster wrecked havoc on the island, an earlier report in Today said. The singer said, “The devastation is beyond belief.”

She was born in the Bronx, New York to Puerto Rican parents.

She also revealed that she and her cousin have not yet heard from their families back in this Caribbean nation.

Right now, the singer is encouraging her followers on social media to contribute to the relief efforts for the victims of the tragedy in Puerto Rico. According to Fortune, this initiative by Governor Cuomo will also include financial support.

Donations from the public will first be gathered at Manhattan’s Javits Center before being delivered through JetBlue Airways Corporation. This carrier also donated $1 million worth of services for these relief operations. It is a low-cost carrier and is one of the largest airlines in the United States.
