Actresses attending the red carpet event of the 2018 Golden Globe Awards are expected to wear black before the show begins, Prestige reported. The color will be a statement piece against sexual assault allegations that came out recently in Hollywood.
The entertainment industry came into the spotlight in 2017 when several celebrities broke their silence and recounted previous experiences of alleged sexual harassment from industry executives. One, in particular, is that of Harvey Weinstein.
These celebrities are attending the glamorous event wearing a black ensemble to stand for women and men who were said to be sexually harassed, different from the colorful ensemble they used to wear in the previous editions of the awards show.
Typically, events like these would blurt out statements against President Donald Trump, but this time, they are bound to speak up on a particular issue.
How it started
The idea of wearing a black ensemble during the red carpet fashion show was started by a group of actresses who initially agreed to wear the same color during the night, US Weekly reported. However, other celebrities banked on this idea and decided to adapt it as well.
It has been said that more than 30 women are expected to wear the color during the event. These actresses include Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain, Helen Mirren, Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman. Aside from these women, even top-brass male celebrities are bound to commit to wearing black as well.
Allegations
Sexual harassment cases in the entertainment industry have become a common thoroughfare so it comes to no surprise that some celebrities will come out every once in a while. But it was in late 2017 when a collective group of Hollywood A-listers allegedly accused Weinstein of sexual assault, BBC reported in a timeline.
The first story was published in The New York Times detailing allegations made by actresses Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan. A few days after, more actresses came forward, including Angelina Jolie and newcomer Cara Delevingne.
What to expect
The 2018 Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by Seth Meyers who previously led the Emmys in 2014 and the ESPY Awards in 2011.
