It is now confirmed that the next “Star Wars” standalone movie will be about Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was the Jedi Master who had trained Luke Skywalker that became one of the greatest Jedi in the galaxy in the original 1977 movie, “A New Hope.”
Although there is no concrete information yet about the movie franchise's next installment, little details about it are now emerging. In fact, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the British director Stephen Daldry, who is responsible for “Billy Elliot” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” is now in the “early talks” to direct the film.
The question is, what will the legendary character's movie feature?
Why is it impossible to feature younger Obi-Wan?
There are a lot of possibilities what the “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi” film might feature. From his backstory to his younger years, there are still a lot of secrets about his personality that needs to unfold.
Nobody knows about his childhood and his unrevealed planet Stewion. Also, his time as a young Padawan under the care of Qui-Gon Jinn hasn’t been featured in any of the franchise’s movies. However, according to Wired, it is unlikely that fans will ever know things about the younger Obi-Wan.
The number one reason for this is that the movie franchise is now handled by Disney. The mass media company is known for sticking to fan beliefs, so it is quite expected that this new standalone film feature what the viewers want to see and not that they need to know.
Another reason for this is the improbable return of Liam Neeson to reprise his role as Qui-Gon. Although Ewan McGregor is open for the possibilities to play as Obi-Wan once again, it looks like his former master has no interest to appear as his Jedi trainer. As it has been 18 years since “The Phantom Menace” was released, it might require a lot of graphic effects to make them look younger.
The fitting appearance of McGregor
If the younger Obi-Wan won’t work as the theme for “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi,” the film might feature his time in exile. This might cover the time from the end of “Revenge of the Sith” to the time he meets the young Luke Skywalker in “A New Hope.”
As yet, there are no official cast members that will star the film, but it is possible that Ewan McGregor could reprise his role as his looks and current age would be appropriate to this period of the character’s life. Also, the 46-year-old star’s appearance in the movie may fit Disney’s pattern of connecting all the “Star Wars” standalone movies to the start of the original 1977 film.
