One of the most memorable scenarios at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards was when Pink gave a very inspirational message directed to her daughter, who she said has been feeling ugly because she thinks she looks like a boy. She told her daughter, and everyone else listening, to never change just because other people have opinions about them.

According to Independent, Pink received the Video Vanguard award, and her acceptance speech was for her six-year-old daughter, Willow. The speech was mainly about self-acceptance.

Pink’s inspirational story

After performing a medley of her hits, Pink shared the personal story about her daughter.

Willow told Pink she thinks she is the ugliest girl that she knows because she looks like a boy with long hair. Pink’s immediate reaction was where wondering where the sentiment was coming from and can she kick another six-year old's butt if the culprit is one of Willow's friends. She did not answer her daughter that time, but she went home and made a PowerPoint presentation for Willow.

What did the PowerPoint presentation contain?

According to Time, the presentation had photos of androgynous rockstars and artists like Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, Janis Joplin, George Michael, Elton John, Prince, and many more. She told Willow that people probably made fun of these artists and legends every day of their life, but they carried on and inspired hundreds of thousands of individuals.

She then sat her daughter down and asked why Willow thought she is the ugliest girl. Willow answered that she looks like a boy so Pink asked back what she thinks her mom looks like. The six-year-old noted that Pink is beautiful, but the singer explained that people make fun of her because she also looks like a boy who is too masculine to be a woman.

Pink gives inspiring message to daughter

Pink added that it doesn't matter if people see her differently and they criticize her for her opinions, what she looks like, that she does not grow her hair out, change her body, or change the way she presents herself to the world. One thing that Pink is good at is “selling out arenas all over the world.”

She told her daughter, “OK!

So baby girl. We don’t change. We take the gravel and shell and we make pearl.” Pink concluded her acceptance speech by saying they should help other people change so they can “see more kinds of beauty.”

Pink went on to thank all the artists present at the 2017 MTV VMAs noting that she is inspired by all of them and thanked them for being their true to themselves.
