Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's relationship has certainly had its very public ups and downs, but Cyrus and Hemsworth are now happily engaged to be married. The singer sat down with Cosmopolitan for their September issue, to talk about her life, career, and relationship.

Cyrus will grace the cover of the magazine for the month of September, which will hit the shelves in just five days time (August 8). Images released of the issue so far show Cyrus at her home in Tennesee, wearing cute denim overalls and sporting a retro-style hair-do, complete with a slick of bright red lipstick.

Liam and Miley's relationship has certainly not been plain sailing

24-year-old Cyrus got engaged to actor, 27-year-old Liam Hemsworth, in 2016 after a previous engagement was called off in 2013. Speaking to Cosmopolitan this month, when asked about what she has learned from her parents' marriage, the star replied that everyone changes and you have to "grow" and "evolve" with each other for a relationship to be successful and happy.

According to Cosmopolitan, the couple first met when Miley was only 16-years-old while filming the Nicholas Sparks' movie "The Last Song." Hemsworth and Cyrus made their first red carpet appearance as a couple in 2010 at an Oscars event. That same year, a besotted Miley told MTV News that a lot of her songs were about boyfriend Liam.

In August 2010, the couple had their first break-up, with reports suggesting that it was the result of busy work schedules. In September 2010, the couple was spotted back together, but the reunion only lasted until November when they called it quits again. Cyrus and Hemsworth rekindled their relationship in April 2011 and publically attended events together, such as the CNN Heroes Gala.

All went well for the couple in 2011 and 2012, with the pair confirming an engagement in June 2012.

The first engagement is called off

In early 2013, the couple holidayed together in Costa Rica. However, cheating rumors surfaced in February and Cyrus was spotted without her engagement ring in March. However, the couple was seen back together in June that same year, and Miley accompanied Liam to the premiere of "Paranoia" in Los Angeles.

In September 2013, it was confirmed that the engagement was off and Miley spoke with Cosmopolitan about her new found freedom in the magazine's December issue.

In 2014, Miley started dating Patrick Schwarzenegger, with the relationship ending in April 2015 after Schwarzenegger was seen getting intimate with another girl. Finally, in 2016, Miley was spotted wearing her engagement ring again and moving into Liam's house. However, although the couple was seen out together and appeared on each other's social media feeds, they did not confirm anything. The engagement was eventually confirmed in October 2016, during an interview between Miley and Ellen DeGeneres on the comedian's show.
