Even though it was the shortest episode of them all, "Game of Thrones" Season 7 Episode 4 definitely met everyone's expectations, be it the Stark reunion, an important discovery in the cave, or The Field of Fire 2.0, one of the greatest battles in television history. On top of that, the episode ended on a cliffhanger which left the fans wondering about the fates of Jaime Lannister and his faithful companion, Ser Bronn of the Blackwater.

In the last shot of the episode we see Jaime falling deep into the water with a heavy armor and only one hand, so we are led to believe that he won't survive.

But how could this be? Doesn't Jaime have an important role to play? But on the other hand, "Game of Thrones" has a long history of killing major characters so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities that we just saw the last of Jaime Lannister. Only time will tell, and until the next episode, we can only speculate. Luckily, there are plenty of theories regarding this issue. So in this article, we are going to cover the most interesting ones.

What will happen to Jaime?

According to the popular theory, Jaime Lannister could be Azor Ahai, the prophesied hero who will defeat the White Walkers and bring the dawn. But he can't be Azor Ahai if he's dead, right? Actually, the last shot of "The Spoils of War" fits quite nicely into this theory.

And some fans even go as far as to suggest that this shot actually confirms that Jaime Lannister is in fact, Azor Ahai. Should I explain?

My speculation is that Jaime will die, but he will definitely be reanimated, most likely by Bronn. But on the other hand, he could just die metaphorically. Perhaps the last episode was the end of Jaime as we know him.

The symbolism in the final shot of Episode 4

Reddit user NsRhea pointed out how the heavy Lannister armor is quite literally pulling Jaime deep into the darkness which represents Cersei's negative influence over him. He is trying to be a good person, but his sister keeps using him as a puppet. Perhaps this battle will be the turning point, and Jaime Lannister could finally become the hero he is meant to be all along.

Azor Ahai twist

Another Reddit user BryanDGuy had an interesting point as well, predicting how Jaime will strip off his Lannister armor and will swim to the top of the pool. That way he will be born again amidst salt (of the water) and smoke (of the dragon fire) as Azor Ahai.

Luckily, we don't have to wait long to find out. "Game of Thrones" Season 7 Episode 5 will air on Sunday.
