If you're watching "Game of Thrones" season 7 - and you probably are - you know what kind of man Jon Snow has become. You probably remember his great love for Ygritte as well. But you may don't know that Jon Snow was in love with another girl in the original outline of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series included in the letter George R.R. Martin sent to Harper Collins back in 1993.
Who was that girl? Well, let's just say it was a northern one...
Jon Snow in the original plotline
In the letter, Jon Snow is described as one of the main characters of the to-be-written fantasy book series. He's the bastard son of Ned Stark, who joins the Night's Watch and becomes a "ranger of great daring", then the Lord Commander of the Watch. While Jon is at the Wall, King Joffrey Baratheon beheads poor Eddard Stark and the Lannister-Stark war begins. Robb calls the banners in rebellion. Arya and Catelyn Tully manage to escape King's Landing and reach Winterfell, but shortly after, Winterfell is besieged by Tyrion Lannister.
Catelyn, Arya and Bran escape from the siege and go north while hounded by Lannister riders. When they reach the Wall Jon Snow can't help them, as the member of the Night's Watch give up their family when they swore the Watch's oath. Catelyn, Bran and Arya aren't pleased by Jon and Benjen's loyalty to their oath. But Arya "will be more forgiving"...
Jon's tormented love story
Soon Arya realizes that she's fallen in love with Jon, who is not only a "Crow" but also her half-brother. And Jon falls in love with Arya as well! The desire they feel for each other torment them throughout the whole series and nourish a "deadly rivalry" between Jon and Tyrion.
Tyrion? Yes, Tyrion Lannister. They respect each other in both the books and the TV series, but not in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" original outline.
When Jaime kills any other pretendant and sits on the Iron Throne, he blames his brother for the murders, causing Tyrion to head north to join the Stark. When he sees Arya, Tyrion falls in love with her, but Arya doesn't love him. She has eyes only for Jon. Nonetheless, Tyrion's passion fuels a rivalry with Eddard Stark's bastard son.
Jon's true parentage
But, just like in the show, Eddard is not Jon Snow's real father. And when Jon's true parentage is revealed, at the end of the planned book series, he is not Arya's half brother anymore.
It's interesting to see how much the plotline has changed from what Martin imagined in 1993. In 2017 millions of people watch "Game of Thrones" every Sunday, and in the very next episode of the show, as we saw in the trailer, Jon will meet again Tyrion Lannister, a rival in the original plotline, a potential ally in "GOT" season 7, along with Daenerys Targaryen, who, according to a few theories, may be Jon's next crush in the TV show.
