From Edward Cullen to Christian Grey? That actually almost happened, according to Robert Pattinson. The 31-year-old English actor recently revealed that he could've taken Jamie Dornan's role in the hit Fifty Shades franchise.

So what actually went wrong?

Why Pattinson did not end up in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'?

Earlier this week, Robert opened up about his unforgettable "drunken meeting" with Fifty Shades author E.L. James and hinted that he almost landed the role of kinky billionaire Christian Grey.

Apparently, the two met at Chateau Marmont with the help of a common friend.

Robert, who was allegedly excited to meet the famous author, instantly bombarded her with questions about the book and even forced her to tell him about her fantasies.

“ I was a little bit drunk and I literally kept forcing her to tell me every one of her fantasies and it was fun. I was absolutely terrified.”

Pattinson reportedly thinks that his drunk behavior probably turned off the author, which ended up with him not getting the infamous role.

Christian Grey was inspired by Edward Cullen

Although Robert did not end up with the role of Christian Grey, he still played a huge role in the character.

In 2015, it has been revealed that Jamie Dornan's character in Fifty Shades of Grey was inspired by his performance as Edward Cullen in Twilight.

During an interview, Robert admitted that he has never read the book before, adding that it's kind of weird for his character in Twilight to be the inspiration of Christian Grey.

E.L. James is a big 'Twilight' fan

Meanwhile, the famous author of Fifty Shades franchise revealed that she is a big fan of Twilight. In fact, she even admitted that its author, Stephanie Meyer, inspired her to write her best-selling romantic novel.

James also revealed that Fifty Shades of Grey started out as a fan fiction spin-off of Twilight. The author added that the erotic novel was first posted on an online forum that allows fans to share their stories inspired by their favorite works.

"I was inspired by ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer ... she just kind of flipped this switch in my head."

Interestingly, there are some striking similarities between Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey such as the main characters.

In Twilight, Edward Cullen is portrayed as someone mysterious, jaw-droppingly handsome vampire, while in Fifty Shades, Christian Grey is a mysterious, drop dead gorgeous CEO.

The same goes for the heroine. Bella Swan and Anastasia Steele are both "pretty" but not "beautiful," and intimidated by their partner's good looks and wealth. Both are also clumsy at times and regularly question why they were chosen by their dreamy partners.
