James Cameron’s movie “titanic” was released in 1997, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Billy Zane. The movie includes a love triangle between Zane, DiCaprio, and Winslet, before the luxury liner strikes an iceberg, and the people on-board meet a watery grave -- with only a few survivors.
The movie is a masterpiece, depicting the tragic maiden journey of the luxury ship, sticking to the facts as much as possible.
James Cameron’s team went to great lengths to recreate the atmosphere of the previous century, complete with period furniture and accessories. The final result is marvelous.
DiCaprio, the hero of the movie, is an acclaimed actor, and apart from movies, his interest lies in improving the Environment – his setting up a foundation in 1998, soon after the release of “Titanic" is proof of that aspect of his life.
Why the three met?
Fox News reports that the trio of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane had come to France to raise funds for DiCaprio’s foundation dedicated to the noble cause of protecting the environment in all its forms.
It is a subject close to his heart and he leaves no stone unturned to fulfill his dreams.
The three of them attended an event in St. Tropez, France. The purpose was to generate funds for raising awareness among the people about need to protect and preserve our environment. As Billy Zane remarked – they want to save the icebergs. The obvious reference is to the breaking away of icebergs due to global warming that has been reported in recent times.
In the course of the event, a dinner with Winslet and DiCaprio was auctioned off. The lucky winner could dine with the two Academy Award-winning actors and could choose a restaurant in New York.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have both won Academy Awards but not for “Titanic” – DiCaprio’s Oscar came in 2016 for “The Revenant” while Kate took it in 2009 for “The Reader.” The two have also starred in the 2008 drama “Revolutionary Road” together.
DiCaprio’s Foundation
The theme of “Titanic” is relevant even today because a huge chunk of iceberg floating in the ocean could pose a danger to ships in its vicinity. That is probably the reason why Leonardo DiCaprio wants to pass on a message to the world at large about the long-term health and well-being of the environment which is of prime importance for the people. Many species of wildlife lose their natural habitats due to global warming. It also leads to disturbance of the ecological balance in the form of unseasonal rains, floods and landslides and bring misery for the people and these must be avoided to ensure the survival of mankind.
