A potential "Big Little Lies" season 2 could work and no less than HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed that there's a script being written down. Bloys, however, did not say if the drama series has been renewed but the show isn't also exactly canceled either.

Bloys expressed in a panel at the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour that he already asked writer Liane Moriarty to come up with a new story for "Big Little Lies." Moriarty wrote the book that the first season was based on and she also worked with David E.

Kelley on the HBO show.

"First we have to see the material and see if it’s worth everyone’s time," Bloys said, as per TV Line. "And if it is, [we’ll have a] conversation about directors."

Why there shouldn't be a second season

When "Big Little Lies" ended its short run following seven episodes last spring, stars Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Martha Mackenzie) and Nicole Kidman (Celeste Wright) immediately expressed their willingness to come back and do another run. Both Witherspoon and Kidman also serve as the show's executive producers.

Only there's one problem. Liane Moriarty's book was a short novel, and the show's story was only good for one miniseries.

Even director Jean-Marc Vallé said in an interview with Vulture that "Big Little Lies" was a one-time thing that ended where it was supposed to end. "If we do a season two, we’ll break that beautiful thing and spoil it," Valle said.

Fans of both the book and the TV miniseries also believe "Big Little Lies" ended on a good note, and the story has nowhere to go from there.

Why there should be a new season

"Big Little Lies" ended with a closure for Kidman's Celeste and Shaine Woodley's Jane Chapman. The man who abused them, Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), met his untimely death.

While Nicole Kidman agreed to a Variety interview that the women did get some justice, their story could still go on to empower more women who have dealt with abuse.

The actress revealed that since the show aired, she has been approached by women who not only complimented the series but also appreciated what the story meant to them. It's for this reason that the actress would like to continue her work in “Big Little Lies.”

Meanwhile, the show, which aired on Feb. 19, 2017, to April 2, 2017, to a full number of audience, received 14 nominations at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards. It is up for Outstanding Limited Series as well as acting nominations for Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern.
