The debut of HBO’s new murder mystery, “Big Little Lies,” attracted an estimated 1.13 million viewers, according to The Nielsen Company. The new weekly series stars several of the United States’ most-popular actresses, including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley. The first episode debuted at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Feb. 19, with the second episode set for Feb. 26. Estimating how many people watch television programs has become more difficult since the onset of internet streaming of programming.

In addition to its presence on a variety of cable and satellite company lists of channels, HBO is also available as a standalone service customers may access directly via the internet. For now, TV ratings are less likely to be accurately tracked than before.

Who died?

“Big Little Lies” is both dramatic and funny. Set in Monterey, California the first episode is titled, “Somebody’s Dead.” Who died and how will be revealed at some point in the seven-part series.

In its debut, several characters suggest no one would have been killed if Reese Witherspoon’s character had not been present when a dispute began between Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley over allegations of bullying among first graders at a private school. The series is based on a book of the same title by Liane Moriarty.

Shailene Woodley

The all-star cast has a favorite actress for most age groups. It’s possible Woodley is not as well-known as the other name actresses, but she is a teen favorite.

She starred in 121 episodes of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” She also was well-received as the character Tris in “Divergent,” “Insurgent” and “Allegiant,” She won several awards from film critics for her portrayal of Alexandra King in “The Descendants.”

Zoe Kravitz

Another graduate of the Divergent series of movies is in the cast. Zoe Kravits, who portrayed Christina in the trilogy. Kravitz also picked up plenty of fans several years ago when she portrayed Pearl in the Showtime series “Californication.” She also appeared in “Mad Max: Fury Road” as Toast the Knowing.

Zoe is the daughter of rocker Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet, who portrayed Denise Huxtable on “The Cosby Show.”
