The brains behind "Orphan Black" haven't been reluctant in killing some of our favorite characters in the most shocking ways. In fact, the show opened to the death of Beth Childs (Tatiana Maslany), who killed herself by jumping in front of a train. Her suicide was witnessed by Sarah Manning, who was surprised by her obvious resemblance to the woman who just committed suicide.
The latest episode of "Orphan Black" Season 5 has brought us another piece of bad news after one of the clones died in the hands of James Frain's Ferdinand Chevalier. (Warning! Spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.)
Who was killed?
Viewers were left baffled and astounded when M.K./Mika a.k.a. Veera Suominen was killed in the most gruesome way possible on Saturday's "Clutch of Greed" episode. Her death came after she informed Sarah Manning that she is experiencing the same symptoms as Katja and Jennifer Fitzsimmons did before they died from respiratory failure. The same illness that Cosima has been working to find a cure.
We knew something bad was about to happen when Ferdinand followed Sarah to Felix's (Jordan Gavaris) flat to pick up Veera. Unfortunately, the former Topside operative succeeded in stomping the expert hacker to death out of sexual frustration with Rachel Duncan.
James Frain's character even left Veera her lamb mask after completing his mission in taking down the lone survivor of Helinski.
Why did they kill Veera?
"Orphan Black" showrunners Graeme Manson and John Fawcett said M.K. and Ferdinand had a "longstanding conflict" which started when the former Topside cleaner killed Veera's best friend and compelled the clone to go after him and steal his money. In fact, the clone hacker has almost killed James Frain's character if not for Sarah and S.
Manson thinks it was time for Veera's character to go after her deep-rooted issue with the antagonist. The showrunner even warned that "nobody is safe on the show" especially now that they down to their fifth and final season. He even teased the fans for more exciting episodes before "Orphan Black" concludes in August.
Fawcett explained Ferdinand's gruesome murder of M.K. stemmed from a lot of anger he has not expressed even after Rachel betrayed him. Another factor that pushed him to commit the crime? Seeing Veera dressed like Rachel. He added that James Frain's character has a lot on his mind when the killing took place.
"There are many layers, and I like it because it’s complex. It’s not just killing M.K," Fawcett added.
