James Gunn created one of the most surprising hits of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the lesser-known "Guardians of the Galaxy" became a huge hit. He has since followed up with its sequel and seems to be building a huge new world that Marvel Movies can explore outside of the Earth-bound heroes. Gunn has already announced that he is working on the script right now for "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" but it sounds like he will be doing a lot more than that movie for Marvel.

The Marvel Cosmic Universe

In an interview with IGN, James Gunn said that he is overseeing the Marvel Cosmic Universe, even after "Guardians of the Galaxy 3." Gunn has already introduced a lot of things that can build into this part of the Marvel Universe, including the Nova Corps, The Ravagers, the idea of Celestials, an Easter egg hinting at Adam Warlock, and much more.

According to James Gunn, the directors and producers behind the scenes at Marvel talk "all the time" about where the movies will go after "Avengers: Infinity War," which is supposed to mark the end of the Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor stories.

While most of the core Marvel characters are likely to survive, Marvel will move to fresh characters to keep the brand alive, with names like Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel the likely next stage of the Marvel movie world. Now, it looks like that will including the Cosmic Universe.

Possible movie directions in the Cosmos

The biggest idea after watching "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is the idea of The Ravagers. With an Easter egg in the closing credits showing some big names teaming up, it seems almost a sure thing that they will show up again down the line.

Sylvester Stallone, Ving Rhames, Michelle Yeoh, Michael Rosenbaum, and the voice of Miley Cyrus, the cast alone would sell a Ravagers movie.

Another idea brought up in the closing credits was when Ayesha, angry at losing to the Guardians of the Galaxy, announced she was bringing a weapon called Adam. In Marvel Comics, Ayesha is the twin sister of Adam Warlock, a powerful superhero in the Cosmic Universe who protects one of the Infinity Stones and is a sworn enemy of Thanos.

Also, a possibility is the character of Nova. In the first "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, the Nova Corps were introduced as was Nova Prime, their leader played by Glenn Close. In Marvel Comics, the character of Nova is a teenager from Earth who was brought in to serve and is almost like a version of Spider-Man in Outer Space.
