The end of "Fargo" might be near and show creator Noah Hawley urges viewers to play close attention to season 3's final episode, which airs on Wednesday, June 21. The writer and producer say's he is unsure whether "Fargo" will be renewed or canceled on FX after its current run.
Speaking to an audience at the ATX Television Festival over the weekend, Noah Hawley said he doesn't have an idea for "Fargo" season 4 even as the third season is about to end.
He opened up and admitted he wasn't even sure his show would get renewed for season 2 and 3 before, so his creative process took a while to come together.
"There’s only a certain amount of storytelling you can tell in that vein," he said. "And I love telling stories in this vein, but I don’t have another one yet. So watch the 10th hour [of Season 3] because it might be the last."
FX boss also unsure
FX CEO John Landgraf categorically told The Hollywood Reporter back in May that a "Fargo" season 4 could be a long shot after its current run. But then he also said this decision isn't up to the network executives.
Rather, it's really up to Noah Hawley.
"Unless Noah has an idea for ‘Fargo’ that he thinks he can make as good as the prior three," Landgraf said. He implied that the network will remain open to the show’s return as long as there’s a good story from Noah Hawley.
Hawley’s schedule, Fargo’s cast
Even if FX renews the show for season 4, however, the writer/producer's creative process and the show’s story development could take a longer time to come together now more than ever. This is because FX also renewed his other show, “Legion,” for a second season, which means he will have his time and attention divided.
The 1996 film of the same title, which was written and directed by the Coen brothers, inspired the development of “Fargo” on television.
The series followed an anthology format where every season is a different story with different characters.
The first season, which aired in 2014, starred Billy Bob Thorton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tollman, Bob Odenkirk and Oliver Platt. The second season, which aired in 2015, had Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Patrick Wilson, Jean Smart and Jeffrey Donovan. The third season features Ewan McGregor, David Thewlis, Carrie Coon and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
"Fargo" earned numerous awards including Outstanding Miniseries at both the Emmys and the Golden Globes during its previous two runs. The current season is also a strong awards contender, especially for Best Actress its strong female characters.
