Amber Heard has been a news headline staple over the past year following her highly publicized divorce from "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp and a new romance with Tesla boss Elon Musk. She's also a newly minted DC Extended Universe star, with roles in this year's "Justice League" and 2018's "Aquaman" from director James Wan.

The 31-year old actress plays Mera in "Justice League," which brings together a handful of DC superheroes, including Ben Affleck's Batman, Henry Cavill's Superman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa's Aquaman, Ezra Miller's Flash, and Ray Fisher's Cyborg.

In both upcoming films, Heard is set to play Mera, Aquaman's love interest.

As production has begun for the upcoming film, Heard took to Twitter to share that she skipped donuts for her "Aquaman" role. Here's what else she has been up to in order to become Mera.

First look at Mera revealed

Amber Heard's hard work at the gym is totally paying off, as evidenced by the first look at Mera that "Aquaman" director James Wan shared via Twitter. The director shared a photo of the actress suited up as Mera, dripping wet in what looks like a harbor. He wrote, "Lady MERA swept in from the sea. First day with the exquisite Amber Heard."

Just a few hours later, Heard also shared another shot herself in her costume, in the same location, but in another angle.

Mera is noticeably wearing the "Aquaman" logo on her waist, as well as a skin-tight, scaley looking bodysuit. The actress is also sporting red hair for the role. "Aquaman" is set to arrive in theaters on December 21, 2018.
