The "Fast & Furious" franchise wasn't built on a story, as you may already know. It was based on a bunch of guys and girls who happen to be big fans of things with four wheels which go really fast. A little-known fact is that "The Fast and the Furious" has nothing to do with the 1955 film of the same name. In that film, a man is wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit.

Dominic Toretto was imprisoned for a crime he did commit, and as he says in the first film in the series, he'll "never go back."

This was a fact backed up by a sequence at the beginning of "Fast Five" when former FBI agent Brian O'Conner and Dom's sister Mia broke him out of a transport bus heading to the prison. Since then, Toretto has become more of a criminal hunter himself, at least until he went rogue once more in "Fate of the Furious."

Even though the series strayed a bit, it was always about the cars

"Fast and Furious 6" was the first time the franchise strayed from its focus on fast cars and attempted to take a different route with its "team vs team" dynamic.

"Furious 7" brought the series' alignment back in check and gave it a serious tuneup by adding Jason Statham opposite Dwayne Johnson, and some death-defying stunts involving cars once again.

Dennis Mccarthy is mostly responsible for the cars used in the series, which is odd considering that he's actually more well-known for his role as composer for the "Star Trek" franchise.

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Dennis says that the paint job and overall style of the car had been made to fit Paul Walker's actual personality. Considering that Walker actually died in a car crash years later, it seems fitting.

1970 Dodge Charger R/T

Much like Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto, the car has a certain character element which can't be ignored.

Dennis says it fits Dom so well, it's been a theme for everything the character chooses to drive. With frightening muscle under a mean exterior, the car fits the man.

1994 Toyota Supra MK IV

This was the "ten-second car" Brian used to settle his debt with Dom, used in the final scene of "TFATF," and it symbolizes their ultimate kinship.

1993 Mazda RX-7

Dominic Toretto's ride of choice for winning races early on, Dennis felt it was one of the best choices with the power under the hood, being one of his own favorite imports.

1997 Nissan 240SX

Used primarily in the "race wars" segment, this car was Letty Ortiz's (Michelle Rodriguez) choice to win her brief chance to shine.

1994 Acura Integra GS-R

Dennis explains that this ride was one of the easiest to modify, a central element to the story of the first film.

2000 Honda S2000

This was another one of those easily modified import racers which just fit naturally in the first film.

These were all of the major cars used in "The Fast and The Furious." Dennis continues to explain the rest of the franchise's rides in the rest of the video above.
