We all had our ideas and wishes about the finale of "The Vampire Diaries", and we were probably all wrong! It was totally unexpected and way too emotional, even for those who were not loyal fans. Spoiler alert!

Did the characters deserve the ending they got?

The last thing we expected was to see Damon become human. And why should he? Even though Elena fell in love with him and forgave all of his mischief it still does not erase everything he's done. However, the director Julie Plec kindly explained that it was actually a fair outcome since his last moment of innocence was when he was human.

Stefan, who took humanity away from him, had many “innocent moments” himself, but Damon didn’t have the pleasure. It was only fair to give Damon one more chance and to prove that true love can change the worst side of a man.

The second thing that surprised us was, of course, Stefan’s death! Many fans were deeply disappointed. On the other hand, when you think about it objectively, Stefan had a pretty great life. He had his ups and downs, just like every one of us, but he had true friends, he found love twice, so it was only fair that he sacrificed himself to give his brother a chance to finally experience that as well.

As for the other characters in the series, they all got their happy ending.

Bonnie got to live her life to the fullest until she reunited with the beloved Enzo on the “other side.” Even though Caroline became a widow on the first day of her marriage, she got to do something good by opening a school for the gifted children and we even saw a small hint of a possible future romance with Klaus. Maybe we will see their story in the upcoming season of “The Originals.” Fingers crossed!

Other characters, who managed to survive all eight seasons and the finale, also got a chance for a new and better life.

A scene we would all love to see was cut out

All in all, we can be happy with the final episode of “The Vampire Diaries”. However, it would still be nice to see one scene directors decided to cut out of the episode, and it is a scene where Damon proposes to Elena.

Co-creator Kevin Williamson gave an explanation in his interview with TV Guide: “And there was a moment in the show where he proposed and she responded after medical school. And the whole point of that moment was just to show that she became a doctor. And so we thought, ‘Oh, we’ll just put her in scrubs and we can cut that piece.’”

Either way, we will always be in love in "The Vampire Diaries“ and even though it is over one thing's for sure- we will watch it over and over again in the future!
