The ten years of marriage between former spice girl Melanie Brown and Stephen Belafonte has reached breaking point with Mel filing for divorce in a court in Los Angles
The 41-year-old singer has cited “conflicting differences” in her documents as the reason for the split. The couple had married in Las Vegas in June 2007 and also has a daughter, Madison. Court documents accessed by Mail Online put the separation date as December 28.
Defended husband in the past
In 2015 Melanie had refuted reports that her husband had physically assaulted her just after appearing on the "X Factor" UK.
In spite of visible signs of bruises and scratches Mel defended her husband and also denied that she was held hostage by her husband in their home. Media and paparazzi had long speculated that the couple was having problems with their marriage. There were reports that Stephen was bossy and had kept Mel in isolation and was violent and abusive.
Mystery woman cause of split?
Two months before Mel filed for a divorce Stephen was spotted speaking with a mystery woman while his wife was performing on stage. The 41-year-old producer seemed pretty close with the woman and was seen holding her hand and whispering into her ears.

Mel is seeking joint custody of their daughter and has asked the judge to negate spousal support to her film producer husband, Belafonte.
Earlier in February Melanie had posted a picture on Instagram of her and husband and described Belafonte as her world.
The former Spice Girl who was also the judge in "America’s Got Talent" alongside Simon Cowell, lost her father Martin who died of cancer at the age of 63. Stephen has been accused of being bossy by Mel’s Sister Danielle but had made up with her sister and was at the bedside of their father, who had died after a long battle with cancer.
Mel has two more children, nine-year-old daughter Angel from a brief relationship with actor Eddie Murphy as well as an 18-year-old daughter named Phoenix from her first marriage with dancer Jimmy Gulzar. Husband Stephen also has a daughter Giselle from a previous relationship.
