With the 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremonies in full swing, the winners are now being updated one on one online as they are announced. The wins so far have been following some easily expected trends, and on that vein they are assembling a picture that states: with the right combination of a right story, a good director, a catchy score and some star power, a live-action musical film can once again win widespread critical and audience acclaim to the point of putting the genre back on the spotlight.

Summit Entertainment and Gilbert Films have done just that with the charming Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone starrer “La La Land”.

Seven for seven

As of this writing, “La La Land” has successfully swept all seven Golden Globes categories it has been nominated for. Even the ceremony proper itself was keen to praising the musical’s success so far, with host Jimmy Fallon performing a rip-roaringly hilarious and cameo-loaded parody of the film’s song-and-dance opening scenes (while taking digs at Donald Trump, and he wasn't the only one). As for the awards won, it was almost academic when Gosling and Stone received their Golden Globes for ‘Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical Motion Picture’ and ‘Best Actress’ in the same.

Their spirited and talented performances as the struggling jazz pianist Sebastian and aspiring actress Mia were a sight to behold in the movie.

The other four motion picture Golden Globes were an affirmation of the labor of love and skill that went into the production. The award for ‘Best Musical Score’ was a triumph for Justin Hurwitz. Also added to the accolades was the award for ‘Best Original Song’ in “City of Stars”, a masterpiece collaboration by Hurwitz and theatre composing duo Pasek and Paul, played during the scene when Gosling’s and co-star Emma Stone’s characters are beginning to warm up to each other. It managed to beat out a strong contender in “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s latest animated film “Moana”.

And these musical pieces wouldn’t be half as effective in their medium without the visual element provided by Damien Chazelle, who received the Golden Globe for ‘Best Motion Picture Screenplay’ and ‘Best Director’.

Finally, ‘La La Land’ itself would walk away with ‘Best Motion Picture Comedy/Musical’ to top off a wonderful night for the film’s stars and crew. This victory came in spite of some unexpected competition in the form of 20th Century Fox’s surprise smash hit superhero flick “Deadpool” starring Ryan Reynolds, the highest achievement of the underfunded yet still successful action/comedy romp yet.

Golden Globe Awards other winners

In a snippet of other winners of the 74th Golden Globes, Disney’s first animated offering of 2016, the modern fable “Zootopia” bested a field of four other names for ‘Best Animated Film’, including fellow Disney “Moana”. On the television end, Netflix’s Queen Elizabeth II biopic series “The Crown” upsets HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for ‘Best Drama Series’ while “Atlanta” gets the ‘Best Comedy/Musical Series’ Award.
