"Days of Our Lives" is a long-running soap opera on NBC. Officials and fans are worried that Megyn Kelly's new shows will have an impact on the future of the daytime drama. Megyn Kelly left Fox News on Friday, January 6, but no date has been revealed as far as when she will start her new job at NBC.
'Days of Our Lives' rumored to be canceled
The soap opera officials are concerned, and they have every reason to be. One of Megyn Kelly's shows could be put in the soap opera's time slot which will cause "Days Of Our Lives" to end after 51 years. It has been rumored that several cast members have been told that this will probably be the last year for the series.
The scripted television program is the oldest one in the world. It has aired nearly every weekday since November 8, 1965. However, that doesn't mean anything when it comes to changes NBC wants to make. For the last few years, the drama has been renewed only on a year-to-year basis. That means the current contract is only good through the end of this year. Therefore, staff and cast members fear they won't have a job after 2017.
Decisions have not been finalized about when any of Kelly's new shows will start. She is still under contract at Fox News until July. Then she has a six-month non-compete agreement which means she has to sit out during that time period before going to another network in a similar capacity.
That will take her to the end of the year to coincide with the end of the "Days of Our Lives" contract. Therefore, the soap opera should be concerned. It just might be canceled so Megyn Kelly will have the coveted time slot.
Other soap operas canceled
If "Days of Our Lives" is replaced by another talk show, it won't be the first time this has happened.
ABC canceled "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" in 2011 to make room for the daytime talk and cooking show, "The Chew" and "The Revolution" that didn't last very long. CBS got rid of "The Guiding Light" in 2012 to make way for Katie Couric's talk show, "Katie," that ended in 2014. "Days of Our Lives" airs in a primetime slot that would be an ideal time for one of Kelly's shows.
