“Luzia” is a breathtaking spectacle even by the standards of Cirque du Soleil—a company that revitalized the art of the Circus. Presently the most well-known circus organization on earth, Cirque du Soleil marries physical dexterity with art, music, dance, song, and fashion in a way that was never before seen prior to their formation. Now with several shows playing all over the world, “Luzia” is the latest show to arrive at New York’s CitiField.
The dazzling spectacle is inspired by Mexican culture and does not disappoint in either of its two acts.
Acrobats, jugglers, and clowns
“Luzia” is Cirque du Soleil’s abstract, artistic, and breathtakingly beautiful ode to Mexican culture. The performance features key aspects of Mexican music, song, language, and items such as marigold flowers and sombreros. Also present are an abundance of performers dressed up like horses, jaguars, monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, and other creatures that hold symbolism in Mexican culture. It features staples of the circus such as acrobats, jugglers, clowns, and a phenomenal contortionist.
Yet it also includes truly innovative elements such as the waterfall apparatus that is extended from the ceiling and has the ability to cascade water down on the performers in an array of shapes. The stage, which can rotate—while solid for the majority of the show—also has a center section that occasionally morphs into a pool. These aspects make “Luzia” and its offerings truly memorable and different from other shows.
Each segment of “Luzia” is inspired by a certain aspect of Mexican culture, history, or beloved past times such as football and Mexican wrestling. However, not all segments are clearly explained unless you purchase the gorgeous full-color program that dives into the inspiration behind each act.
The entire show plays like one big fiesta with truly artistic flair. As expected, the makeup and movements are impeccable and the resident clown is especially adept at engaging the audience in hilarious interactive segments. The acrobatic performances are, as usual, spectacular and at no point do the performers break from their roles as beings from another—more beautiful—dimension who are taking the audiences on a surrealistic and pleasurable journey through a vibrant dreamscape. As many actors as acrobats, it’s hypnotic to focus on their movements and facial expressions throughout the show...plus the incredible costumes and accessories/adornments.
Colors, music, and costumes
As with most Cirque show, this one takes place in a dream-like environment that is marked by bright colors, cheerful music, and an assortment of strange yet friendly creatures and unique visuals.
Artistic flair, playfulness, joy, and a strong sense of wonder are on full display at this show, as is the case with most Cirque performances. From a sunny field to a dusty bar, to a rainy jungle, to a crowded beach, this show takes audiences on a journey between the past and the present that is nothing short of mesmerizing.
It is also worth noting the beauty of the enormous gold-and-white tent itself and the festive, atmosphere inside the lobby of the big-top which offers an array of snacks and Luzia and Mexican-themed merchandise such as dolls in monarch butterfly costumes and sugar skull coffee cups.
“Luzia” will remain at CitiField until Sunday, June 9, 2019. Anyone who enjoys circuses and is in the New York area should certainly consider attending this marvelous show. Tickets start at $54 and extend up to $275. To learn more, visit the official website.
