Donald Trump has a team of over two dozen religious advisers. On Wednesday many of them were quoted as denouncing the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, without criticizing number 45. One evangelical leader who was not quoted was Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University. Falwell later tweeted his support for the man currently occupying the white house.
Falwell has been a loyal supporter of Donald Trump
Jerry Falwell Jr. is the head of the largest Christian University in the nation, on which has a diverse student body. He has however shown himself to be a very conservative Republican. Fawell was criticized for supporting the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump because the Donald had been twice divorced and was on his third marriage. His support paid off when Trump won the November election, and the Liberty University Chancellor was named to be a member of the presidential religious advisory committee.
The support continues as Falwell tweeted that he was proud to have a leader who made a bold, truthful, statement regarding the tragedy in Charlottesville. Considering that his school has students from all over the world which include those of various ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs, one may have believed Jerry Jr.
would have made a statement to give hope and encouragement to his diverse student body, but he did not.
Falwell's attitude may seem racist to some
Jim Wallis wrote an article where he called out Jerry Falwell Jr. for saying Trump was a dream president for evangelicals. Wallis believes this is only true for white evangelicals with views similar to Falwell'. He says that Christian leaders should be holding the commander in chief accountable for his seeming lack of morals and points out that Donald Trump's agenda is not favorable to immigrants or Americans who are not Caucasian.
Truthfully Jerry Falwell Jr. is not exhibiting the love of Christ by supporting a president who will not stand up for all Americans.
He has however validated for some that he himself may have a racist attitude. Three people died on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. The Neo Nazi's were shouting racial slurs and anti-Semitic slogans. As a Christian Falwell should exhibit compassion, but he did not.
Instead, he is proud of a Nazi sympathizer president, who stands o for white supremacists and the KKK. Earlier in the day, it seemed Jerry Falwell's silence spoke volumes, but now his actual words are confirming what is in his heart. There is an old saying that birds of a feather flock together. This comes to mind regarding the similarities in our "Christian" president and his good friend the "Christian" University chancellor.
