K-Pop has been dominating the music world globally with their catchy songs and amazing choreographies. It has already made its mark on American mainstream television over the past decade.

It was back in 2006 when the K-Pop entered the United States. It was when the Korean R&B and pop singer, Rain, was voted first place in the Time 100, the magazine’s annual poll to determine the most influential people of the year. He also took the first place spot again the following year beating “The Colbert Report” host, Stephen Colbert. The rivalry of the two lead Rain to showed up for a dance battle in “Dance Dance Revolution” in 2008. It was the first time a K-Pop singer appeared on American cable television. Rain grabbed again the top spot in 2011.

In 2009, Wonder Girls attempted to break into the United States market when they appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show” and “So You Think You Can Dance”. They released few English songs when they stayed in the U.S. for awhile while being an opening act to The Jonas Brothers tour. Their career in the United States climaxed with their self-titled Teen Nick movie in 2012. Also in that 2012, the supergroup, Girls’ Generation, became the first K-Pop act to appear on “Live With Kelly” and “The Late Show With David Letterman,” where they performed a remix of their 2011 song “The Boys.” The Korean pop invasion truly began when the South Korean rapper and producer, Psy, released his song “Gangnam Style” that went viral on summer 2012. He appeared on “Ellen” and performed the dance craze with Britney Spears. After that, he was everywhere in the United States. In 2014, K-pop took a big step on American TV when 2NE1 song, “I Am The Best,” was used in a Microsoft advertisement. They also appeared on “The Bachelor” and “America’s Next Top Model” when both shows were filmed in Korea.

Aside from the K-Pop group and artists mentioned above, there are many K-Pop acts that were noticed in the U.S. The list includes; BIGBANG with their popular song, “Fantastic Baby”; the boy band group, BTOB; the Korean-American hip-hop artist, Jay Park; Sistar with the song, “Touch My Body;” Hyuna’s “Bubble Pop;” Twice, EXO and the most recent who is currently dominating the music world, BTS.

BTS, the seven-member boy band group who is famously known as Bangtan Boys or internationally known as Beyond The Scene, is currently taking the music world by storm. They became the first K-Pop act to be nominated in the Billboard Music Awards in the category Top Social Artist. They also created history in K-Pop as they were the first K-Pop act to attend at an American awards ceremony and actually received an award for Top Social Artist in May 2017. They also hold the record for being the highest-ranked K-Pop album in the Billboard 200 and for entering for the first time on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with their newest title track “DNA.”

2017 is definitely the time for K-Pop to shine globally!
