As millions of Americans celebrate Mother's Day, Donald Trump and Melania Trump sent out their holiday greetings on Twitter. After doing so in separate posts, critics of the administration decided to hit back.

Trump on Mother's Day

The relationship between Donald Trump and Melania Trump has been in and out of the headlines in recent months ever since the Wall Street Journal broke the news of an affair between the president and adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Additional reports have since speculated about trouble with the first couple, including Melania allegedly keeping her distance in private. Fast forward to present day and both the president and first lady sent out Mother's Day greetings in a pair of May 13 posts on Twitter.

"My fellow Americans. This Sunday is one of the most important days of the year, Mother's Day. It's a special opportunity to thank all the mothers and grandmothers in our lives," Donald Trump said in a video tweet. "My mother was a great person. Her name was Mary MacLeod. She came from Scotland and she met my father when she was very young," he added.

"She was just incredible. Warm. Loving. Really smart. Could be tough if she had to be, but basically she was a really nice person," the president continued. "So much of what I've done and so much of what I have become is because of my mother. I miss her a lot. Happy Mother's Day," Trump concluded.

As for Melania Trump, her post was more generic, tweeting simply, "Happy Mother's Day" while attaching a picture of flowers.

As expected, those who oppose the president and first lady didn't hold back their thoughts.

Twitter reacts

Following the posts by Donald and Melania Trump, social media quickly went viral in response. "No mention of Melania, the mother of his child. Sad," one tweet read.

"Empty words from the dotard in charge!" a Twitter user wrote.

"Thanks for the sentiment but based on your historical horrible treatment of women in general and the Mother of your son Barron in particular you are the last person I would want extending any kind of support to my Mother or wife," a tweet added. "Happy Mother's Day! In honor of them you will have thousands of elderly mothers lose their nursing homes, lose food stamps since they cant work, and cut their Medicaid," an additional tweet read with mockery.

"Your mother should have been charged with crimes against humanity," a social media user wrote.

"HAPPY TURN THE OTHER CHEEK WHILE YOUR HUSBAND PAYS A P*RN STAR 130K IN HUSH MONEY DAY," Kristina Wong tweeted back to Melania Trump." "I'm sorry your husband doesn't want to be with you on Mother's Day... oh, or did he ask what you wanted and you said, 'for you to leave?'" a Twitter user replied to the first lady.
