One of the biggest foreign policy questions hovering over the United States is what the country should do with Syria. In his latest tweets, Donald Trump put the blame on former President Barack Obama while finally calling out Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump on Putin
For the better part of the last two decades, Bashar al-Assad has ruled in Syria, creating turmoil and instability in the region as the pressure mounts on other nations to make a move.
In recent years, the Assad regime has also been accused of war crimes, including the murder of Syria civilians who have attempted to flea the country to save their own lives. One of the country's top supporters has been Russia, putting the Donald Trump administration in a bind due to their alleged collusion with the Kremlin during the 2016 presidential election.
The latest headline out of Syria has accused Bashar al-Assad and his government of using a chemical attack to kill at least 70 civilians, including children, which resulted in a series of tweets by Donald Trump on April 8. "Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria," Trump tweeted.
"Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world," he added, before tweeting, "President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad."
"Big price to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!" Donald Trump wrote in a follow-up tweet. In his third and final tweet on the matter, the president pointed the finger of blame at Barack Obama. "If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In The Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago!" Trump wrote, while concluding, "Animal Assad would have been history!"
Twitter backlash
After Donald Trump's tweets on Syria, he was quickly called out by critics.
"So now, you will probably not serve Putin dinner on the good China!!!" one tweet read.
"What happened to your eye? Is it sharia? An eye for an eye? Oh you sustained it in one of jihady escapade! You should be arrested! Fool!" a Twitter user wrote. "Ah, your friends Putin and Assad have a way with chemicals, don't they?" one tweet added. "Ooooooh. A rare Putin call out. But President Putin? Why no nickname? Pudgy Putin? Poison Putin? Penisface Putin? Nicknames only for Democrats and Kim Jong-un?" another tweet stated.
"Obama's family was a model of mutual respect and support. Your family is a mire of venality and debauchery," a social media user wrote. "If there would be anyone who needs to have a good backbone(as in support), it's Donald Trump," a follow-up tweet read.
