Donald Trump made his way to the West Coast to visit the prototypes for his controversial southern border wall on Tuesday just hours after firing now former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. After making several questionable remarks, the president was quickly called out and mocked for his efforts.

Trump and the border wall

When Donald Trump first announced his plan to run for president back in the summer of 2015, he did so by labeling the majority of illegal immigrants from Mexico as "rapists" and "murderers." Since then, tackling illegal immigration has been once of his top priorities, with his plan for a border wall between the United States and Mexico being at the top of his list.

Kicking off his day on Tuesday, Trump fired Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, and also longtime personal John McEntee.

As reported by ABC News on March 13, Donald Trump addressed reporters after visiting the border wall prototype. "If you don’t have a wall system, we’re not going to have a country," the president said, before insulting the California Gov. Jerry Brown, saying, "I think Governor Brown has done a very poor job running California." Trump went even further, expressing his desire for a "see through" wall.

"You have to have see through. You have to know what's on the other side of the wall," he added.

"These are professional mountain climbers.

They're incredible climbers. They can't climb some of these walls," Donald Trump said of potential illegal immigrants, while stating, "California’s sanctuary policies put the entire nation at risk. They’re the best friend of the criminal." Not stopping there, Trump went on to claim that "the wall will save hundreds of billions of dollars, many, many times what it’s going to cost," a statement that has been debunked on more than one occasion.

Instant backlash

Following his remarks about the border wall, Donald Trump quickly came under fire from critics. "This is so embarrassing for us as a country," one tweet read.

"Mountain climbers?

What an idiot," a Twitter user wrote. "Professional mountain climbers with those tons of drugs on their backs just pouring over the boarder in 100 degree heat. What a complete joke!! SNL HERE WE COME. Saturday night - not available unless you bring the pizza and popcorn!" yet another tweet stated.

"He has to be the longest running April Fool's joke ever. Can it please just end already? You got us. We're all fooled. Real POTUS please?" a social media user asked. "Oh my God how hateful and embarrassing," a tweet added.
