Donald Trump has not had the best start to 2018 and his approval rating continues to hover around just 35 percent. With the government shutdown continuing, the president decided to praise his favorite cable news network on social media, but didn't get the best reaction in return.

Trump and Fox News

It's only been three weeks into the new year and Donald Trump has already faced constant backlash pertaining to a variety of issues. Whether it was the release of "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by author Michael Wolff, or his reported comments about Haiti, El Salvador, or countries in Africa being a "sh*thole," or even the current government shutdown, the former host of "The Apprentice" and his administration have been forced to address the scandals and outrage from the majority of the mainstream media, much to the chagrin of the president.

While this has been taking place, Trump has been doing everything in his power to deflect away from the negativity and focus on more positive aspects of his presidency, which he did during a tweet on January 21 in thanking Fox News for their favorable coverage and reviews.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday night, Donald Trump attempted to give himself an ego boost by thanking Fox News for their continued support of his presidency. "Thank you to Brad Blakeman on Fox News for grading year one of my presidency with an 'A,'" Trump tweeted.

"Likewise to Doug Schoen for the very good grade and statements," he continued, while adding, "Working hard!" As expected, critics of the president decided to chime in.

Twitter reacts

In response to Donald Trump's tweets, those who oppose his presidency made sure to give their thoughts. "Do you wipe the lipstick marks off your a** immediately or do you walk around with them all day so only you know they're there and you can feel sexy?" one tweet sarcastically wondered.

"As if anyone from Fox News would want to lose their job for giving you the grade you deserve," another tweet added.

"This is serious?, because if it is a joke is good," a Twitter user wrote. "Thank you mom for grading my years as a son with an 'A-' and likewise to my dad for the very good grades and statements. Hardly working!" another social media post stated.

"In special ed classes teachers give everyone an A to keep their spirits up, and also write the kid's name in their underwear band to avoid confusion after gym class," an additional tweet noted. "No President EVER thanks a network for getting graded. Not Ever. Its not the Emmy's Donald, a Twitter user pointed out.
