To ring in the new year, Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and Barron Trump arrived at the president's privately owned resort in south Florida. As the first family made their way inside Mar-a-Lago, the president stopped to say a few words.

Trump on 2018

Over the last year, the presidency of Donald Trump has changed the direction of American politics and of the country in general. Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton stunned not just those in the United States, but also around the world, and the opposition to his presidency was made loud in clear in 2017.

While Trump was able to close out the year having signed his tax reform bill into law, not much more was done in the form of legislative accomplishments, as the president spent much of the year rolling back Obama-era laws, recklessly sending out tweets, and denying the controversy and scandals surrounding his administration, mostly over the ongoing investigation into Russian election interference. Despite this, Trump appears to be optimistic heading into 2018, and elaborated further as he made his way to his private Florida resort for New Year's Eve, as reported by NBC News on December 31.

With First Lady Melania Trump and his son Barron Trump by his side, Donald Trump entered Mar-a-Lago on Sunday night to party for New Year's Eve.

Before entering, the president gave a few thoughts to reporters. "Happy New Year everybody," Trump said, "we have a great crowd."

"We're gonna have a great year. It's gonna be a fantastic 2018," Donald Trump went on to say. "We are off to a very good start with the great tax cuts and getting rid of the individual mandate which was very unpopular as you know," he continued.

"We are going to have a tremendous year. The stock market I think is going to continue to go up. Companies are going to continue to come into the country," he added. "We look forward to seeing you inside, " Trump said, while adding, "come on along!"

Instant reaction

Following the Trump family arrival at Mar-a-Lago, it didn't take long before critics made their opinion known.

"His voice makes me nauseous," one tweet read.

"Melania has been replaced by a cyborg! The real Melania is watching TV in her room with Barron.'Pretend you're asleep if u hear daddy coming,'" another tweet noted. "What is with Malaria’s dress, it looks like she can’t move," one Twitter user wrote. "@FLOTUS looks like she was designed for @WestworldHBO," a social media user added.

"The corporate puppets are so lifelike.

You might think for a second that you aren't in an episode of the Twilight Zone," an additional tweet noted. "His shape reminds me of the blueberry girl from Willy Wonka," yet another tweet pointed out.
