Times Higher education published its list of top universities in the world after comprehensive and balanced performance evaluation. The rankings are based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators across five areas: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

Among 1,000 big schools across 77 countries, the leading institution is from Oxford, England, United Kingdom.

The University of Oxford (established in 1096) remained on the top spot after gaining it for the first time last year while Oxford's historic rival, the University of Cambridge has jumped from fourth to second place.

Undeniably, World's University Ranking 2018 was the second year of any US institution's failure to claim back the number one position. The US dominated the world in the past 12 years of ranking but were fallen behind to the third spot. California Institute of Technology and Stanford University are both ranked as third.
