As the scandal surrounding Donald Trump and Russia heats up, it's been the testimony of former acting Attorney General Sally Yates that has dominated the headlines over the last 24 hours. After getting into a heated exchange with Yates, the internet made sure to hit back at Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Cruz trolled

Not long after Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president on the floor of Trump Tower back in June 2015, rumors of his relationship with Russia kicked into gear. One of the first red flags regarding the controversy was Trump's refusal to release his tax returns, creating speculation that he could be hiding potentially damaging financial information from his history as a businessman.

Another issue that critics focused on was Trump's praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he would routinely shy away from criticizing, despite calling out many other world leaders in the process. As time went on, the former host of "The Apprentice" was forced to deal with several of his advisers and associates being exposed for having spoken to high-ranking Kremlin officials, including retired Gen. Michael Flynn who was forced to resign as National Security Adviser because of the revelation. During the aforementioned Sally Yates testimony, Ted Cruz did his best to defend the administration but it didn't go over well, leading to massive Twitter trolling on May 9.

The reason Sally Yates is no longer the acting attorney general is due to the fact she refused to enforce Donald Trump's controversial "Muslim ban" executive order.

Yates has also spoken out against the White House, especially in regards to what role Michael Flynn had with Russia. While questioning Yates, Ted Cruz did his best to pin her down, claiming that the Office of Legal Counsel gave Trump the right to order the ban in question. Time and time again, Yates pushed back against the Republican from the Lone Star State, debunking Cruz's claims and leaving him scratching his head in the process.

Twitter reacts

In response, social media users took time to troll Ted Cruz for failing to come out on top in his exchange with Sally Yates. "They're going to need to exclude 'burns' from the list of pre-existing conditions," actor George Takei tweeted out.

"Sally Yates brilliant. Russia closing in on the trapped rat," actor and director Rob Reiner tweeted out, before adding, "Might take a while, but greedy, sick pathological liar heading out." "Truly a thing of beauty to watch!! Ms. Yates out-classes @tedcruz inethics, intellect, and morals!" another Twitter user wrote.

"I go to sleep smiling tonight, knowing somewhere in Washington, Ted Cruz is crying into his pillow, yelling, 'Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!'" a tweet went on to read. "The craziest thing about today's testimony is that Ted Cruz had any dignity left to destroy," Chase Mitchell wrote on Twitter. As the tweets kept coming, Cruz quickly became the butt of the joke, as Yates watched her star power increase by the moment.
