On Thursday, Republicans were forced to postpone a vote on their health care alternative after party leaders failed to gain enough support to ensure the bill would pass. As the party looks to regroup and vote again, Donald Trump decided to take a shot at certain group within his own party in the process.
Trump on Twitter
Repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, has been the top priority for the Republican Party ever since it was signed into law back in 2010.
The health care law was the most divisive issue that Democrats and Republicans would argue about, as former President Barack Obama spent the better part of his entire time in the White House attempting to sell it to the American people. When it became clear that Donald Trump was going to become the new president, and with Republicans in majority-control of Congress, it was inevitable that the party would act on health care reform as soon as possible. Earlier this month, House Republicans revealed their health care replacement, but despite support from Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan, many GOP lawmakers have opposed the bill, leading to the president lashing out on Twitter on March 24.
Taking to his Twitter account on Friday morning, Donald Trump continued his attack on Obamacare. "After seven horrible years of ObamaCare (skyrocketing premiums & deductibles, bad healthcare), this is finally your chance for a great plan!" Trump tweeted out.
Not stopping there, Donald Trump took a shot at the right-wing Freedom Caucus who have opposed the bill in question, creating the biggest obstacle for the former host of "The Apprentice" and other GOP leaders. "The irony is that the Freedom Caucus, which is very pro-life and against Planned Parenthood, allows P.P. to continue if they stop this plan!" Trump wrote on Twitter, in a direct hit at members of his own party.
Next step
After the vote was canceled on Thursday, reports noted that Donald Trump became frustrated with his fellow Republicans, walking away from negotiations and demanding a vote on the bill before the weekend.
According to reports, Trump informed those who oppose the new replacement bill that if they don't take a vote on Friday, that he will leave Obamacare on the books and move on to other issues on his agenda.
