Who is ready for National Taco Day 2017? Actually, the real question should be who isn't ready for such a great day! On October 4, folks from coast to coast can celebrate one of the most popular foods served here in the United States - the taco. The taco has become an American staple, competing with All-American favorites like the hamburger and hot dog as one of the most requested foods for lunch, parties, or just a quick snack. So who invented the taco? How did it become so darn popular? Why do millions of people consume so many every year? While not quite 100 percent positive at just when and where the taco got its humble beginnings, the Smithsonian strongly believes that tacos date back to the 18th century and the silver mines in Mexico.

The word “taco” referred to the little charges they would use to excavate the ore from the silver mines. These were pieces of paper that they would wrap around gunpowder and insert into the holes they carved into the rock face.

It may sound outrageous, but sometimes the craziest terms or ideas come from the most unconventional ties. The paper blanketed the gunpowder, much like a taco blankets the tasty treat inside. It does seem logical.
