Teething happens between 6-24 months of age, but sometimes it can happen as early as 3 months and as latest at 14 months. This is the process when the baby teeth start to erupt. Teething is also when the baby feels uncomfortable and uneasy because s/he may feel pain due to erupting tooth or teeth.
Gum massage and the use of cold cloths
One of the easiest methods to help soothe teething is by massaging the affected area.
Gum massages are easy to do, just make sure the forefinger is clean. Remember to put very little pressure on the gums and massage them gently. Similarly, using cold washcloths can help soothe your teething baby. Just soak the clean cloth into a bowl filled with cold water or breastmilk. Don’t worry about gnawing as it eases the pain.
Chilled food and breastfeeding
If your baby has already started eating solids before teething, try giving him or her cold yogurt or applesauce. The coldness will not only soothe their gums but will also make the baby full. In spite of this, there are other children that prefer breastfeeding instead.
They tend to nurse more often as they can feel relaxed while feeling their mother's love and care.
Dry the Drool
When teething occurs, usually excess saliva comes with it. Expect your baby to make a mess at times as s/he’ll often stick their hand in their mouth and even wipe it on your clothes. While not exactly harmful, too much drool might cause skin irritation for your baby. To avoid this, always keep a soft and dry cloth with you to wipe away the saliva. Similarly, if you think your baby might have drooled a bit too much, you can apply some kind of water-based cream or lotion to soothe the affected area.
Over-the-counter medicines and distraction
Giving your baby an OTC Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen may help, especially when they cry in the middle of the night.
But always have clearance from your Pediatrician for they can prescribe or advise certain medications in line with your baby’s age.
Incidentally, you could try to distract your baby with other devices. Try giving your baby a teether toy or give him or her a bath. Other times, babies will just need a different environment to be “distracted” by their ongoing discomfort.
Teething can be tough for parents as our babies become cranky because of the pain. However, these safe home remedies can definitely work wonders and help soothe your baby. But if ever nothing works and your child is still frustrated, consult your doctor right away so they can determine what is happening in order to give a proper diagnosis.
