Microsoft has decided to replace the Xbox One with the Xbox One X. Due to a poor launch, the company's current console has really struggled to put a dent on Sony's monopoly with the PlayStation 4. With the Xbox One S on the market and the upcoming updated version, Microsoft has decided to put the original Xbox One out of its misery.
Last time we discussed the best Xbox One console exclusives, which can be viewed here, so it is only fitting to consider the most disappointing games released for the console. These are titles which received a lot of hype prior to their launch, but failed to live up to the hype.
'Ryse: Son of Rome'
Developed by Crytek, "Ryse: Son of Rome" was a launch title for the Xbox One and, honestly, sold well enough.
Unfortunately, it is one of the most disappointing console exclusives. Although it is a rather polished game with a few good ideas, the final product suffers from poor execution.
The combat works on a rock-paper-scissors system, where players choose if they want to heal, increase their attack, or receive more XP for each kill. Although it is not the worst mechanic ever, the by the numbers scenarios mean that players are just doing the same thing over and over again. The gameplay might be flashy, but it lacks any real depth. The story benefits from a unique setting but struggles to do anything new with it.
A bloody and over-the-top hack and slash game, "Ryse: Son of Rome" is not Microsoft's answer to "God of War."
'Quantum Break'
Remedy Entertainment might have tried to do a bit too much with "Quantum Break." A third person sci-fi shooter which allows players to manipulate time, a four episode series was released alongside the game to extend the story.
The gameplay might not be broken, but the story suffers from poor pacing. Once the player unlocks a few abilities, the battles do allow for some creativity, but the enemies rarely provide enough of a challenge to be all that worthwhile.
This is another game which is not horrible but still ended up being one of the most disappointing Xbox One exclusives.
It was meant to be one reason people would buy Microsoft's product over Sony's PS4, but "Quantum Break" was quickly forgotten upon its release.
'Fighter Within'
Yes, we have to include this one. After all, it does currently have the worst Metacritic rating out of all Xbox One games. "Fighter Within" is like a microcosm of all the wrong decisions made by Microsoft during the console's launch period. More importantly, its entire gameplay revolves around the Kinect, which barely worked.
