Nintendo has been earning big bucks when it released the NES Classic Edition in 2016. So much so that the company decided to make a follow up with its SNES Classic Edition scheduled to hit the store shelves on Sept. 29 this year.

But did you know that Nintendo was not the first company to offer such retro consoles? Apparently, AtGames has been selling mini game consoles for years, and the Atari Flashback 8 gold is their latest retro device for 2017. This next version from AtGames will feature classic Atari games from the 1970’s up to the early 1980’s.

The game device is also scheduled for a September release just to compete with Nintendo’s SNES Classic Edition and will reportedly have an $80 price tag.

What can the Atari Flashback offer?

For starters, the retro game console has a total of 120 games built in from the Atari 2600 library. People would be able to play classic games such as “Pitfall,” “Chopper Command,” “Yar’s Revenge” and the “Swordquest” series, just to name a few. Much like its Nintendo counterpart, the console won’t be able to play old-school cartridges and only limited to the games already installed. Moreover, many of the games that are built-in are also included in older versions of the Atari Flashback.

The retro device also features a 720p HDMI video output.

However, this connection won’t improve the game’s graphics in any way. The HDMI is there for easy connection for modern HD televisions. The console comes with two wireless Atari joysticks which use 2.4GHz radios instead of infrared. Owners will also be able to use their wired joysticks and paddle controllers.

There will be four versions of the Atari Flashback

In addition to the Flashback 8 Gold, AtGames will also release three other versions; Atari Flashback 8 Gold Activision Edition, Atari Flashback 8 Classic and the Atari Portable. The consoles will feature 130 games, 105 games, and 70 games, respectively. The Atari Portable will have a rechargeable battery with a built-in screen.

However, there is no information about the pricing of the other versions as of this writing.

Before you decide to purchase the game device, it's worth to mention that many of the game titles included in these consoles are also available on other platforms such as “Atari’s Greatest Hits” for Android and iOS devices. You can check out the trailer below.
