Last December, we saw the reveal trailer for the highly-anticipated and long-rumored sequel to Naughty Dog's spectacular survival-horror game, "The Last of Us," as they revealed that the game will now have a part 2. While the reveal wasn't exactly shocking, it definitely got people excited, even though we're probably a few years away from it being released.
Shortly after the reveal, Neil Druckmann, the creative director at Naughty Dog, refused to give a release date, nor would he give out a release window.
So, it's pretty clear that we're still quite a way away from this game being released.
A small team is working on 'The Last of Us: Part 2'
During a recent interview with Euro Gamer, Shaun Escayg, who is the creative director for Naughty Dog's latest "Uncharted" project called "The Lost Legacy," was asked if the studio's primary focus is "The Last of Us: Part 2." In response, he said that, as of right now, the studio's primary focus is "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy," while adding that only a small team is working on "The Last of Us: Part 2," and that it's moving along very slowly.
"Right now, the studio's focus is Lost Legacy," said Escayg.
"We have a truly ambitious schedule. The Last of Us project is working but at a slower pace right now."
Why 'TLOU: Part 2' wasn't at E3
Shortly after this year's E3, which took place last week, Neil Druckmann took to Twitter to explain why "The Last of Us: Part 2" wasn't at the event. In short, he said that while the studio is excited to show everyone more of Joel and Ellie's journey, their primary focus at the moment is "The Lost Legacy," which Shaun Escayg essentially echoed during his chat with Euro Gamer.
Some "experts" are predicting that we won't see "The Last of Us: Part 2" be released until late 2018 at the earliest. Some are even predicting that the release will be put off until the next console generation, which might not be until 2020.
Will 'TLOU: Part 2' be at PSX 2017?
As previously mentioned, we saw the reveal trailer for "The Last of Us: Part 2" this past December at PlayStation's annual PlayStation Experience event (PSX). At the show, it was described as being super early in development. However, the studio knew that they were doing a sequel long before they showed the trailer, as it was put together roughly a year before it was shown.
The question now is, will they show us another trailer at this year's PSX? We don't know for sure, but it's probably safe to say yes. It's also probably safe to say that this year's PSX will be built around the top two PlayStation games that weren't at E3 -- "Death Stranding" and "The Last of Us: Part 2."
