With the trade deadline approaching, rebuilding teams will look to ship off players with value to contending teams in order to receive prospects that can contribute to the major league team in the future. With multiple teams in the American League in the rebuilding stage, the American League features many players that contending teams would benefit from adding. Here are some players in the American League that could find themselves in another uniform very soon.
Andrew Cashner- SP
Cashner has enjoyed a bounce back season on the lowly Orioles and with his newfound success, the Orioles will surely look to ship him out of bird land. Cashner has accounted for a third of the Orioles wins as he has a record of 9-3 on the 27-63 Orioles. He also has a 3.83 E.R.A. to go along with his winning record.
Dylan Bundy- SP
Despite his ugly E.R.A. of 5.28 and his record of 4-11, those numbers can be attributed to playing on a horrible team. Contending teams could see the former top prospect as an option at the back end of their rotation and would come at a reasonable price without having to give up too much in return.
Mychal Givens- RP
Givens started off the season as the closer for the Orioles but has since been removed from that role. Givens has 49 strikeouts compared to 28 hits given up in 34 innings and would most likely be used in a middle relief role on a contending team.
Jonathan Villar- 2B/SS
Villar got off to a hot start to begin the season but has since cooled down. He does have 18 SB and a contending team would benefit from having his speed.
Marcus Stroman- SP
Stroman has been one of the few bright spots on a horrible season for the Jays as he holds a 3.18 E.R.A. while appearing in his first all-star game this year. With one more season left of control after this one, Stroman will be one of the most wanted players on the market and will come at a high cost.
Justin Smoak- 1B
Smoak has clobbered 14 HR this season but that number would have been higher had he not spent time on the injured list. As usual, he's playing strong defense with a .996 fielding percentage and would help a contending team in need of a power bat and a strong defensive first baseman. The Astros or Brewers could be a fit here.
Ken Giles- CL
Giles has been spectacular this season authoring a 1.45 E.R.A. while striking out 53 batters and only giving up 22 hits which has lead to an opponent average of .195. With bullpens playing a huge role in the playoffs, Giles will be a coveted asset for contending teams and should net the Jays top tier prospects in return.
Eric Sogard- 2B
Sogard has experienced a breakout season with the Jays as he has career high numbers in all slash line categories with a .297/.366/.478 slash line with a career-high nine home runs. He would be the perfect player for a contending team in need of a bench bat.
Freddy Galvis- SS
Galvis is another Blue Jays infielder that has experienced a breakout season as he's slashing a career best .269/.308/.464 while playing great defense as the Jays primary shortstop. Like Sogard, Galvis would be a player that a contending team would take as an infield bench bat.
Matt Boyd- SP
Boyd has been the lone bright spot in the rotation on the last place Tigers team who sit at 28-58 on the season. Boyd has put up a 3.87 E.R.A. with 142 strikeouts while only giving up 100 hits in 107 innings pitched.
Shane Greene- RP
Greene has had a great season so far as he holds a 1.09 E.R.A. with 22 SV and an opponent average of .158. Greene has one more year of control after this season and would probably be used in a setup role on a contending team.
Nicholas Castellanos- RF
Castellanos has put up a slash line of .282/.342/.468 but has seen his power decrease as he only has nine home runs in 84 games after hitting 20+ HR in the past two seasons. Castellanos also has experience playing 3B and is a free agent after this season.
Alex Gordon- LF
Gordon has found renewed success as he's slashing .275/.352/.447 and is batting above .270 for the first time since 2015. Gordon has spent his whole career in Kansas City and has a mutual option attached to him for next season at $23 million which is unlikely to be picked up.
Billy Hamilton- CF
Hamilton only excels at two aspects of the game which is running and defense. Hamilton has 16 SB on the season and any contending team would welcome his speed off the bench and can also be used as a defensive replacement late in the game.
Danny Duffy- SP
This season, Duffy has put up a respectable 4.64 E.R.A. and would fit nicely in the backend of a contending teams rotation. After this season, he is under contract for two more years at $30.75 million.
Jake Diekman- RP
Despite his bloated E.R.A. of 5.06, Diekman has struck out 54 batters and has only given up 28 hits in 37 1/3 innings. He has an opponent average of .203.
Jose Abreu- 1B
Abreu has been having another great season as he's batting .278 and slugging .522 with 21 HR. While he would be a coveted trade chip, the White Sox might opt to keep him around and try and extend him in the offseason to have him around when they become a competitive team which should be soon. He would also be a valuable player on the team as he would be a mentor to fellow Cuban Yoan Moncada and the younger players that will rise through the White Sox organization.
Alex Colome- RP
Colome has put up a 2.02 E.R.A. while converting all but one save (20 for 21) with an opponent average of .127. Colome would most likely be used in a setup role by the contending team that acquires him.
James McCann- C
After being non-tendered by the Tigers, McCann has enjoyed a breakout season as he has career-high numbers in every slash line category with a slash line of .316/.371/.502. The Astros, Rays and Brewers would all benefit from adding McCann.
Hansel Robles- RP
Ever since Cody Allen was released by the Angels, Robles has done a good job as the Angels closer as he's converted 12 of 14 saves while putting up a 2.74 E.R.A. in 43 games. Robles comes with one more year of control.
Cam Bedrosian- RP
Bedrosian has a 3.56 E.R.A. while striking out 45 batters and giving up 32 hits with an opponent average of .196. He is under control until 2021.
