The Nebraska baseball team opened the Stillwater regional with a victory over UCONN on Friday afternoon. In that victory there were a couple of things that stood out from the rest.
It's the first regionals win in five years.
The Huskers beat UCONN 8-5 on Friday and that was a big win for more reasons than one. Not only did Nebraska baseball get off to the best start you can hope for in the regionals but it was the first regionals win since 2014. It's just the second postseason win in the Darin Erstad era.
Huskers showing a never say die approach
If you were one of the Nebraska baseball fans that saw Darin Erstad's boys fall behind 4-1 against UCONN you definitely weren't alone. The fight they showed after the second inning, outscoring the Huskies 7-1 the rest of the way could be a sign they're ready to make some noise in the postseason.
Maligned Bullpen steps up
Nate Fischer did not have his best stuff today. In fact, it was near his worst. The Nebraska baseball starter lasted just 4.2 innings allowing 13 hits and five runs. The bullpen however, led by Robbie Palkert came in and threw 4.1 shutout innings to help the Huskers win the game. Considering how maligned the pen has been this season, that's a huge boost.
Hitters must tighten it up
Yes, the Huskers had eight runs and 13 hits, but they also struck out an astounding 16 times. While UCONN is by no means a bad team, the Cornhuskers are going to have to make more contact. If they do that, and still hit like they did on Friday, Omaha isn't entirely out of the question.
Up and down performances since regular season continues
The Nebraska baseball team allowed 20 hits on Friday, 20. That's not a typo. It's incredible they allowed that many hits and still won the game. In the Big Ten tourney, there were some very good outings for Nebraska baseball starters and then some really bad ones. It's almost as though that Jekyll and Hyde performance all in one game against UCONN. It would be great to see some consistency in the next few games of the Stillwater regional.
