Prince Harry's choice for a bride is bringing up several age-old issues that will impact their future as man and wife. The son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana is to be commended for simply meeting a beautiful woman, falling in love, and asking her to be his lifelong partner. Because, however, he did not adhere to the protocol that has been laid out for centuries for the Royal Family, his union with Meghan Markle is bringing to the forefront the curious realities of our society. With it also comes somewhat of an understanding of why the harsh regulations related to pedigree and class were put into place.

Meghan's father is the Royal Family's nightmare

Thomas Markle has announced that he will not be walking his daughter down the aisle because of health issues. He most likely is not attending the wedding because of his recent staged photos, with Meghan’s dad saying that he does not want to embarrass her, but in fact, he already has. His not understanding discretion regarding all things Royal makes it a little easier to understand why previously only blue bloods were allowed to marry into the House of Windsor. Those who have been trained in or lived in close proximity to the ways of nobility can flow into it. Thomas Markle is simply being himself and taking a beating for it.

The same thing happened with Sarah Ferguson, who was hounded by the press because, unlike Princess Diana, she seemed unable to adhere to the ways of the Royal Family.

Kate Middleton thus far is doing just fine, and, as for Meghan, the world must take a wait and see approach. Prince Harry and his fiancee are living out the curious realities of modern society in front of a glaring spotlight. So far, so good, but Thomas Markle is poised to be a nightmare for the Royal Family. This unfortunate situation, however, does shed light on one reason why unions with commoners have been frowned upon.

Who will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle?

Another curious issue that has now come to light is related to who will now walk Ms. Markle down the aisle. Meghan is biracial with her dominant features being closer to Caucasian, and her father is a white male.

Had he been able to participate in her nuptials, the Royal Family and the world probably would not have given it a second thought. Markle's mother (Doria Ragland), however, is African-American. This begs the question of whether or not society at large (and the House of Windsor) is ready for a noticeably black female to give her daughter away during a royal wedding.

Prince Hary has led the way by falling in love without giving a second thought to the fact that Meghan is biracial and her family is not schooled in the ways of the Windsor family.

He probably would not care who gave away the bride as long as the wedding goes off without a hitch. The rest of the world, however, is not so open-minded regarding gender roles and race. For these reasons, Prince Charles or Prince Phillip may be chosen to give away the bride to her groom. Ms. Markle could also walk down the aisle to newlywed bliss alone. On Saturday, we shall all know for sure.
